THE WESTERN BULLDOGS search for a tall forward might come to an end at next year’s NAB AFL Draft with the club honing in on a potential father-son selection to boost its attacking options in coming seasons.
Ayce Cordy, whose father Brian played 124 matches for Footscray between 1981 and 1988, is firming as a potential father-son selection at Whitten Oval.
Standing 202cm tall and with outstanding athletic attributes, Cordy is a member of this year’s AIS/AFL Academy which enjoys coaching from the likes of Nathan Buckley, Michael Voss and former Bulldog Luke Darcy.
Western Bulldogs recruiting manager Scott Clayton confirmed that his club had the promising Geelong Falcon in its sights.
“We’re keeping a good eye on him this year,” Clayton said.
As part of the AIS/AFL Academy program, all players on a scholarship will spend a week at an AFL club during January.
Cordy, who is also a promising basketballer, will spend a week training with the Bulldogs early in the New Year in what might be a sneak peek of his future home.
“They just get involved and do the training program, so they get a bit of a feel of what it’s like to be at an AFL club and get some exposure to an AFL club,” Clayton said of scholarship holders’ training experience in January.
“He’ll do that with us, so we’ll look forward to that.”
Cordy impressed in three matches for the Falcons late this season but played school football with Geelong College for the majority of the year, something he will again have to do in 2008.
But the Bulldogs have seen enough of the lightly-built youngster to know he looks a player in the making.
“He’s a big, tall player … we’ll see where it takes us,” he said.
“He’s probably a forward at this stage. He’s multi-skilled, he’s also a basketballer having been in some elite basketball squads, so it’s exciting.”
