Footscray-Western Bulldogs Hall of Fame Selection Committee

Appointed by the Club’s Board of Directors, the following five members of the independent selection committee have sole responsibility for selecting eligible candidates for induction into the Hall of Fame.


David Smorgon OAM (Chairperson): With over 40 years of corporate business experience, David was president of the Western Bulldogs Football Club from October 1996 to December 2012, and was awarded Life Membership of the club in 2006.   His service to the Western Bulldogs and to the community was recognised in June 2000 when he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia.


Darren Arthur: Darren is the Western Bulldogs’ club historian and a member of the Western Bulldogs Heritage Committee. He was the researcher of the club’s history books, A History of the Footscray Football Club: Unleashed and The Bulldog Heritage: Historical player register and co-authored the Footscray chapter of the AFL publication The Clubs.


Terry Wheeler: Terry played 157 games for the club (1974–83) in the back pocket, before coaching Williamstown (1984–88). He returned to the Bulldogs when appointed coach during the 1989 Fightback and coached Footscray from 1990 to 1994. Terry is a Life Member of the club.


Ray Walker: Ray played 72 games for Footscray (1959–65), won the club’s best and fairest and was selected to represent Victoria . After coaching in Tasmania, he was a commentator with ABC radio for many years. His football credentials include five years (1981–85) as a VFL State selector and three years as chairman of selectors for the Footscray Football Club.   Ray was awarded Life Membership of the club in 1999.

 

Mike Sheahan: A recognised and well-respected journalist for almost 40 years, Mike was an associate editor of Herald Sun sport and was that newspaper’s chief football writer for 13 years, as well as being the AFL’s media director for four years.  He appears on Fox Footy and Radio 3AW, and is a former member of the AFL Hall of Fame selection committee.
