Hawthorn star Cyril Rioli will play in Sunday’s VFL Grand Final at Etihad Stadium, with the Hawks opting to return the speedy forward in the state league season decider in a bid to prove his fitness for the AFL Grand Final.

Rioli, who has never played a game for Box Hill, will only line-up for the VFL affiliate should Hawthorn defeat the Power.

Speaking to hawthornfc.com.au, Hawthorn GM – Football Operations Chris Fagan revealed that the decision was made in consultation with Rioli.

Fagan also revealed that Rioli’s match time would be monitored in Sunday’s match, expecting the two-time AFL premiership forward to play between 60 and 70 minutes across the four quarters.

Speaking at a joint media conference at VISY Park earlier today, Footscray Bulldogs Coach Chris Maple said his coaching staff would prepare for the prospect of Rioli playing in the state league showdown.

“Obviously he’s a star, we’ll plan that he might play,” said Maple.

“With a bit of luck Clarko picks him, but we’ll be planning that he’s there.”

Two-time AFL premiership midfielder Brad Sewell has also been named in Box Hill’s side, along with high-profile ruck recruit Ben McEvoy.201
