A host of Western Bulldogs players have honed their skills across multiple positions in 2015, with versatility one of Luke Beveridge’s mantras since arriving at the Club at the start of the year.

Perhaps none more so than vice-captain Jordan Roughead.

Roughead began his career as a forward but in recent years has cemented his spot as the Club’s full-back.

In 2015 however, Roughead has developed his craft as a backup ruckman, playing alongside Will Minson in recent weeks.

“The coaches are picking the team that they think is going to give us the best chance of winning,” said Roughead speaking with ABC Grandstand following his side’s loss to Port Adelaide in round ten.

“At the moment that involves me having a role in the ruck and little stints up forward working with Wilba (Minson).”

Although at the beginning of the season, Roughead was seen as crucial to the Dogs’ defensive line up, big performances from Bob Murphy, Matthew Boyd, Easton Wood and the development of Fletcher Roberts, Michael Talia and Joel Hamling has allowed Roughead to play further up the ground.

“It’s great having that depth in our team, those boys (Roberts and Hamling) have showed some great form and they’ve stepped in and performed really well at AFL level.”

In the last three rounds, Roughead has averaged 21 hitouts, playing across all three positions on the ground and on Saturday night against Port, he kicked two goals.

“(Beveridge) has been terrific, he’s just encouraged me to attack the game.

“He and Rohan Smith have encouraged me to go for my marks and try to get the ball moving our way.”

Roughead, like his team, has had a solid first half of 2015 but acknowledges there is plenty of work ahead.

“It’s been a reasonable ten weeks for us, we’d like to be in a better position than what we are.

“We know there are still challenges ahead of so we’re looking forward to getting into the second half of the year, we’ll enjoy the weekend off and get some good recovery in and attack the second half of the season really hard.”
