Rookie ruckmen Luke Goetz says that the guidance and tutelage of fellow big Tom Campbell has played a major role in helping him settle into the Kennel since being drafted in November.

Goetz said Victoria University Whitten Oval is an ideal place for a young player to land in his first days in the AFL system.

“Getting here, the boys have really gotten around me and helped me out a lot with my game,” he told westernbulldogs.com.au

But he reserved special praise for Campbell who’s been preparing the 201cm former Western Jet for the step up from TAC Cup level to the AFL.

“He’s been helping me out with discussions during and after training, and pre-training, doing some marking work to help warm the hands up," Goetz said.

“He’s helped me out heaps, as well as the other ruckmen."

Goetz had an early impact on the Club’s intra club match last weekend, marking twice on the lead and kicking two first quarter goals from directly in front, the ideal start to any football career.

“I was a bit nervy so it was good to get the two early ones," he said.

“The first one I stole from a couple of boys behind me, and I don’t think they were that happy about it.

“But it gave me a lot of confidence in that it settled the nerves, and obviously after the first I got the second lead up which was even better for me.”

Taken at pick 29 in the 2015 AFL Rookie Draft after just half a season with the Jets, things have moved pretty quickly for the 18-year-old, but his natural athleticism, endurance, and quickness will give Goetz every chance to have an impact at Whitten Oval.

Until then, the coaching group have him working on having his football skills catch up to his exceptional athletic ability.

“They’re helping me with my ruck work and learning to read the ball in flight so I can get to that position and use my athleticism to jump at the ball and grab it at its highest point.

“And just running around the ground using my strengths, trying to build my body and tank to compete at the higher level."
