Victoria University Whitten Oval will play host to the AMES Cup ‘Game On’ event today, Wednesday 25 May.

The event gives newly arrived migrants and refugees an introduction to AFL football with an AFL 9’s competition day.

Bulldogs players and AFL Multicultural Ambassadors Lin Jong and Jason Johannisen will be on hand to teach the finer points of the game, with Johannisen looking forward to attending the day for the second year in a row.

“I attended the AMES Cup last year and I look forward to being there again in 2016.

“The participants are always so enthusiastic and it’s great to see them show off their skills on the day.

“Sport was such a big thing for me when I moved to Australia, and it’s great to see that AFL football is having a similar impact for the AMES students.”

The eight teams are made up of English language students from AMES Australia from Footscray, St Albans, Nobel Park, Werribee, Dandenong (2 teams), Box Hill and Flagstaff.

Out of the eight teams competing, three of them (Footscray, St Albans and Werribee) have been trained through the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation’s culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) play Program.

There will be over 100 participants taking part in the day, with presentations to take place at the conclusion of the event.
