Students from the Western English Language School (WELS) have embarked on Victoria University Whitten Oval on for the annual WELS Footy Carnival Day.

The WELS program is a school-based program for newly arrived migrants aged 5-18, with the Carnival on Wednesday hosting students from over five WELS sites.

Students have spent the past term training for the football carnival, and came together on Wednesday to celebrate the skills they have learned and compete for the WELS Cup.

WELS Footscray took home the primary grand final, while WELS Wyndham won the secondary grand final.

The WELS program will continue in term three and four, with students also taking up athletics and tennis.
