Western Bulldogs captain Katie Brennan and teammate Aasta O'Connor have played their last matches of the inaugural AFLW season.

After recovering from an ankle injury that has kept her out since the Bulldogs' Round 2 match against Adelaide, Brennan suffered a quadriceps strain at training this week.

Bulldogs coach Paul Groves said that Brennan still had much to offer the side and would travel with her teammates to Brisbane for Saturday's match against the Lions.

"Katie was all set to come back after her ankle injury, which we've been managing, and then has hurt her quad during training this week, so she won't be able to be selected probably for the next two weeks,” Groves said.

"[It's] really disappointing to miss our skipper. She's pretty shattered but she's an amazing leader around the group and we'll really look forward to having her up in Brisbane with the team."

O'Connor pulled up sore after the Bulldogs' narrow loss to Carlton last Saturday, and a decision was made to draw a line through her season and get the knee treated as early as possible. Fortunately, said Groves, exploratory surgery revealed no structural damage.

"Aasta went in for a little clean-up on her knee on Monday after it pulled up really swollen from the weekend. But the positive to that is that it's nothing structural, it's just a clean-up so she'll go into rehab mode now for the rest of this season and for the first part of the VFL [season] coming."

Despite the loss of Brennan and O'Connor, and the fact that the Bulldogs are no longer in contention for a Grand Final place, Groves is looking for a positive finish to the season for his side.

"We're still about winning games of footy for our supporters and our members at the football club, so that we can get something there. You still want to live in the moment. Yes, we're one and four but we've got a chance to finish off really strongly, starting with a win this weekend in Brisbane."
