In part two of our trade series, westernbulldogs.com.au takes a closer look at the 2014 trade period - one which saw the forward, back and midfield shored up for years to come.

2014 – IN: Shane Biggs + Pick 39  OUT: Pick 37

To essentially move two spots back in the draft, the Western Bulldogs picked up defender Shane Biggs in a trade with Sydney. Sending 37 (received via Adam Cooney trade) to the Harbour City, the Dogs received Biggs and pick 39 in return during the 2014 AFL Trade Period.

Biggs’ pathway into the AFL system was unique. Not drafted from the traditional TAC Cup competition, the defender began his career on the Swans’ rookie list after Essendon spotted him playing for Warrandyte in the EFL. From the Bendigo Bombers to the Harbour City, Biggs played six games in two years – including the 2014 semi and preliminary finals. Since arriving at the Kennel, Biggs has become a staple in the back half, playing 52 games in three years – 26 of those in the 2016 campaign.

2014 - IN: Pick 46 (Caleb Daniel)  OUT: Liam Jones

Western Bulldogs would have to wait a month before striking gold in the trade with Carlton, receiving pick 46 from the Blues for Liam Jones. Taking that selection to the 2014 National Draft, the Bulldogs drafted Daniel after a stand out under 18s campaign in South Australia.

While Liam Jones has resurrected his career as a defender, Caleb Daniel has had an immediate impact, racing to 54 games in just three seasons at the Club. Getting better every year, Daniel averaged a career-high 21.7 disposals in 2017 to take out the ‘Brad Johnson Best Team Player Award’ at the 2017 Charles Sutton Medal.

2014 – IN: Tom Boyd  OUT: Ryan Griffen + Pick 6

Tom Boyd arrived at Whitten Oval in exceptional circumstances. With then-captain Ryan Griffen handing in a trade request, a deal was struck with the Giants for the number one draft pick – with Boyd arriving in exchange for Griffen and Pick 6.

Filling key position stocks for the future, Boyd has also delivered for the now – shaking off a mid-season shoulder injury in 2016 to boot three goals in the side’s drought-breaking premiership victory over the Swans. A performance that highlighted his versatility and put an exclamation mark on a trade that helped kick start the ride.
