Stand-in Western Bulldogs coach Steven King believes Aaron Naughton is a ‘massive chance’ to make his debut against the Giants.

Luke Beveridge has a habit of blooding new players in Round 1.

In 2015, we saw Tom Boyd debut for the Club, in 2016 draftees Josh Dunkley and Marcus Adams made their first appearance, and last season Travis Cloke pulled on the hoops for the first time.

So who’s in the mix this year?  Jackson Trengove certainly made his mark early, Hayden Crozier looks like he’ll be a valuable asset off the half-back-line, and Josh Schache did some nice things in limited game time.

But what about Aaron Naughton?  He picked up 13 touches at Mars Stadium last weekend, at 92.3% efficiency and took five  marks, all the while looking very comfortable against AFL opposition.

Naughton came to the Dogs having played senior football for the Peel Thunder in 2017, where he averaged 14 possessions and seven marks per contest and was rated by scouts as the best intercept marker in the draft.

Stand-in Western Bulldogs coach Steven King said the 195cm key defender is a ‘massive chance’ to make his debut against the Giants on March 25.

“He’s got a spot now in the team and those that put their hand up and perform really strongly again this week will be in the box seat,” King told reporters on Friday.

“Coming in he’s played WAFL footy as a 17-year-old and he only turned 18 in December, but his ability to play tall and small, I think he’s 195(cms), he’s a terrific intercept mark, he’s just one of those kids that you can tell has played senior footy before he got here.

“He’s very composed, nothing fazes him too much, he’s got some great qualities.”
