Western Bulldogs AFLW premiership player Hayley Wildes was among the best afield during the historic VFLW Round 1 game against Richmond, last Saturday at VU Whitten Oval.

Although a disappointing result, there were impressive signs from Wildes and her new teammates.

“Although the scoreboard didn't necessarily show it, I thought we fought it out to the end and there were some really good performances across the board,” said Wildes.

“I was just happy to get my hands on the ball and look forward to working on what I know I need to improve throughout the season.”

Wildes’ AFLW teammate Ellyse Gamble had her first taste of football since sustaining a foot injury during pre-season training, late last year.

“It was great to run out with Gamble again – we all know how hard she has worked behind closed doors and obviously her injury didn’t allow her to put that into practice in the AFLW season, but she’s primed for a big VFLW season I think,” said Wildes.

With a young, developing list, the senior players in the squad have been able to provide leadership and insight acquired through both the AFLW inaugural and premiership seasons.

“There were a lot of girls playing their first game of VFLW and pulling on the doggies jumper for the first time, so I tried to lead them on the field.

“The group of girls we have is great and it was awesome to see them all take the game on.”

The Western Bulldogs VFLW side fell to Richmond by 38-points in the season opening clash at VU Whitten Oval.
