The Western Bulldogs have secured one compensation pick at the start of the third round in this year’s NAB AFLW National Draft after the conclusion of the expansion signing period.

The Bulldogs have lost four players to expansion clubs North Melbourne and Geelong since the end of the 2018 season – Emma Kearney, Daria Bannister, Jenna Bruton (all to North) and Aasta O’Connor (Geelong).

The AFL has the right to alter the 2018 Draft selection order or take any other approach to maintain competitive balance throughout the expansion process.

As part of this process, AFLW lists were profiled when establishing the agreed four-tier payment model.  The combined loss of players for each club then provided an indication of the total impact of the expansion signing period and foundation clubs were compensated relative to the total value of players they have lost.

As it stands, the Bulldogs have picks 10, 23, 26, 34, 45 and 56 in the National Draft, which is likely to be held in October this year.

Geelong has been handed the first two selections in the Draft and two extra picks in the second round, after it secured four fewer players in the expansion signing period than North Melbourne.

The NAB AFLW Trade Period opens today (Wednesday, May 23) and continues until Monday, June 4.
