Tim English is only at simmering point in a pot that is about to boil, according to assistant coach Daniel Giansiracusa.

The 21-year-old ruckman played seven games this season to add to the two matches he played in 2017.

Despite missing patches of football due to injury, he managed another strong year of development.

“Timmy came on in leaps and bounds,” Giansiracusa said.

“He started the year in that number one ruck spot and acquitted himself quite well for a younger type ruckman. Obviously, it’s well documented that young ruckmen take time to develop, but he showed some great signs and he’s still got plenty of growth in his game and will continue to evolve as a player.”

“He’s a really competitive kid.  He’s in a hurry (to develop) and we’ve got to try and harness that the best that we can.

“When you’re young like Tim, sometimes consistency is a thing that can be up and down.”

Giansiracusa believes that English will be able to shape his development by watching the craft of some of the competition’s best ruckmen.

“If you look at the better ruckmen in the competition, and that’s Max Gawn and Brodie Grundy at the moment, they took a long time to develop.  We’re hoping Tim can get to that level.  We’ll help him and support him as best as we can,” he said.

“Tim just has to play to his strengths – that is, covering the ground - being able to get the ball after a ruck contest, follow up and use that.  He probably does that better than most.

“He’ll get another pre-season in and he’ll continue to work hard on his game.”
