In the frenetic aftermath of the Western Bulldogs’ nail-biting one-point win over Adelaide on Saturday night, it was revealed that defender Lauren Spark could add record breaker to her impressive AFLW CV.

Spark was resolute in the face of relentless Crows attacks in the Round 1 victory at Norwood Oval, breaking the record for the most marks (11) taken in an AFLW match.

Four of those grabs came in the opening term when Adelaide was on the charge, with the 33-year-old constantly proving to be a thorn in the side of the home team.

Spark broke the previous record of 10, which was achieved by Brisbane’s Sabrina Frederick-Traub last season.

“I just heard it was quite a few marks.  I didn’t realise,” Spark said in the moments after the game.

“It’s the work around us that allows me to be able to do that.  There are four other awesome backs out there with me.

“They’re the ones that are able to keep the others away so I can mark.”

Spark’s 14 disposals (the third highest tally for Bulldogs players) against the Crows was also a career-best.

The Bulldogs will look to continue their positive start to the season when they play host to Geelong this Saturday, February 9 at VU Whitten Oval.
