The young utility has pace and good foot skills and will become a solid contributor in the Bulldogs half back line in future years. Johannisen made his debut in Bulldogs colours in 2012 after being elevated off the rookie list. The WA recruit was initially drafted to the Bulldogs through the 2010 AFL Rookie Draft with selection 39.

Season by Season

Season in short:

With his 2013 season cut short by injury, Johannisen was looking for a big 2013 to establish himself in the Bulldogs’ best 22.

Although struggling in the first half of the season to find form, playing between the AFL and VFL, Johannisen played six of the last seven matches of the home and away season, missing one game with a calf injury.

Johannisen was a late inclusion in the round 17 side against Gold Coast and took the opportunity, finding his best form of the season, with 25 disposals, three marks and one goal.

Johannisen averaged 16 disposals for the year, and finished the season as part of the VFL premiership-winning side.

The stat that mattered:

The lightning quick defender signed a three-year deal in 2014 that will see him at the Bulldogs until the end of 2017.

What they said:

“I’ve still got a lot of learning and work to do on my game, but to have the ability to play three positions (half-back, wing and half-forward) I think gives the team and myself a lot of confidence.” – Johannisen following his contract extension in 2014.

“He really vindicated and displayed the talent we know he’s got.

“He does really add something to our team because of his leg speed and his ability to break the lines on the outside.” – Recruiting manager Jason McCartney following Johannisen’s contract extension in July 2014.

Season in short:

The rapidly developing former rookie enjoyed a season of consolidation in 2013. While his playing year was cut short by a shoulder injury, Johannisen showed solid improvement in 13 games and flashes of brilliance running off the half-back line. With line-breaking speed, the South African born youngster impressed with his evasiveness and reliable foot skills. He averaged 16 disposals at 78% efficiency and ranked fourth at the Bulldogs for average rebound 50s. In the round five clash with Geelong, Johannisen gathered 24 disposals, four marks and six rebound-50s in a clinical effort running out of defence.

Stat that mattered:

The 21-year-old all but confirmed he belongs in the Bulldogs starting 22 during the year, missing just one game in the senior lineup while fit and available. His 13 senior games were a great improvement on three games in Bulldogs colours last season.

What they said:

“JJ is starting to really mature as a player, and even just his calmness and his composure to make a decision and assess options down the field and then make the right decision is really important.”

- Development Coach Ashley Hansen said after round five

The second year rookie elevation was a standout in the VFL this season eventually making his senior debut in round 19. A medial ligament injury sidelined him for a number of weeks in the middle of the year but he found form quickly on return. He was serviceable in his three senior games, demonstrating poise and composure across the wing and through defence.

Season by Season

Lightning quick midfielder from East Fremantle who has the ability to break the lines, and neat disposal by foot. Has been given time to develop in the VFL and stays on the rookie list for a second year.
