Multicultural Programs

Settlement Grant and Multicultural Programs We are the first club in the AFL to pioneer a dedicated program to engage new and emerging communities who have settled in Victoria.

Our multicultural and settlement programs are client-focused and we aim to empower migrants and refugees to fully participate in the community.

Our programs focus on sustainability through community capacity building of individuals, community groups and services.

We are in a unique position to engage with both the mainstream and multicultural groups through the trust and relationships we have built with them over the past five years to achieve integration and inclusion.

MULTICULTURAL PROGRAMS

The Western Bulldogs has been one of the foundation Clubs to deliver the AFL Multicultural Programs since 2006.  The core objectives of the AFL Multicultural Program are to:

  • Introduce Australian football as part of settlement and integration into Australian society.
  • Build community capacity in culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
  • Increase active participation amongst multicultural communities in Australian football whether as players, umpires or fans of the game.

This is achieved through the Multicultural Schools Football Program, Multicultural Match Visits, Welcome to the AFL Presentations, Cultural Awareness Training & Club Development, Umpiring Awareness, Inter-School Football Competitions for CALD primary and secondary students (MSP Cup and ESL Cup.

The Western Bulldogs Multicultural Programs are proudly supported by Programmed and the AFL.

SETTLEMENT PROGRAMS

The Western Bulldogs is a Settlement Grants Program (SGP) provider funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) to assist new arrivals settle in Australia through sport and physical activity.

The project aims to assist new arrivals in Western Melbourne (defined by the LGAs of Maribyrnong, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Wyndham and Melton) to develop self reliance and integrate successfully into the broader community through sport, health and youth leadership programs.

The SGP target group comprises permanent residents who have arrived in Australia during the last five years as refugees and humanitarian entrants or family stream migrants with low levels of English proficiency.  The Club is currently funded until June 2013 to deliver settlement services.

MORE THAN A GAME

Through the “Building Communities Resilience” program funded by the Federal Attorney General’s Department, the Western Bulldogs will work together with young men (15 to 25 years) from the Newport Islamic Society (NIS) to facilitate their participation and inclusion within the wider community.

The project will use sport, football in particular, to engage with participants to address issues of harmony, cultural identity and social cohesion.

Through group training and individual mentoring, the project will focus on empowering the young people to improve their decision making capabilities and equip them with skills and resources to understand and actively address intolerant views.
