Western Bulldogs Assistant Coaches

Shannon Grant

Shannon Grant was appointed as an assistant coach at the Western Bulldogs in October 2011.

Grant comes to the Club after a successful two-year period with the Essendon Football Club where he filled the roles of Bendigo Bombers Senior Coach and Development Coach.

Grant guided Essendon’s VFL affiliate to successive finals series in 2010 and 2011 after inheriting a side that failed to register a win in the 2009 season.

Grant also worked closely with Essendon’s younger players as Development Coach.

Grant forged a tremendous playing career which included a Premiership, Norm Smith medal, All-Australian selection and Club Best and Fairest in 301 AFL games with Sydney and North Melbourne.

Rohan Smith

Rohan Smith has been promoted to Assistant Coach for Season 2013 after fulfilling the role of Skills Aquisition Coach in 2012.

Smith played 300 games and kicked 254 for the Bulldogs before retiring in 2006.

Smith was named an All-Australian on two occasions (1997, 2003) in his 16 year AFL career.

He also won the 1998 E.J. Whitten Medal as the best Victorian player in the State of Origin clash against the Allies.

Steven King

Steven King was appointed as an assistant coach at the Western Bulldogs in October 2011.

King arrives at the Whitten Oval from the St Kilda Football Club where he was the ruck/midfield coach in 2011.

In his move to the Bulldogs, King will be reunited with Brendan McCartney who he played under during his on-field career at Geelong - including the 2007 AFL Premiership.

King played 240 senior AFL games with Geelong and St Kilda, and was a member of the Cats 2007 premiership side.

King captained the Cats between 2003 and 2006, was a two-time Club best and fairest (2000,2002) and member of the AFL All Australian Team in 2000.

Brett Montgomery

Starting his playing career with the Bulldogs in 1996, Brett has returned home taking the position as Assistant coach at the end of season 2010.

Brett who also played on Port Adelaide’s premiership side and won the Clubs Best and Fairest was known for his skills and strength, along with versatility to play in all areas of the ground.

These attributes as a player made Brett one of the Bulldogs and Port Adelaide greats.

Brett started his coaching career at Carlton in 2007 as Assistant Coach looking after the forward line, then switching in 2009 to defence.

During his time at Carlton, Brett was involved in developing and improving the young Blues list, from a bottom of the ladder side to consecutive finals appearances.
