Bontempelli: I wouldn’t be against round one GF rematch

Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli says he would be open to playing a Grand Final rematch in round one of the 2022 season.

Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli says he would be open to playing a Grand Final rematch in round one of the 2022 season.

The Bulldogs and Demons faced off on four occasions in 2021, including the preseason AAMI Community Series match, with two of those two-of-the-table clashes were played in front of empty stadiums and no crowds.

Bontempelli said he could see the value in a potential opening round MCG blockbuster, particularly for Victorians who have been starved of live footy over the last two years.

“You are always happy to play in good games, big games, especially for the people who have missed out, unfortunately, on seeing so much of the football over the last two seasons,” Bontempelli told The Age.

“I definitely wouldn’t be against playing in another big game at the ’G. Obviously, the Melbourne fans and supporters, they have definitely earned the right to try and celebrate what they have achieved, which is another drought-breaking sort of premiership.”

The four-time Charles Sutton Medallist has kept his hands busy this off-season, releasing his first children’s book, Little Bont and the Big Secret -  inspired by his own family and in particular, late nanna Nancy.

“It’s a pretty special thing – I’m quite lucky that football gives you the opportunities to do little things along the way that I’ll definitely look back on, but especially something as physical as a children’s book,” Bontempelli told 6PR Radio on Tuesday morning.

“(My nanna Nancy) was a pivotal part of my life, and especially with my three sisters, we spent a lot of time at her house.

“She lived just up the hill from our primary school, so we’d often just walk up the hill to Nanna’s place and chill out there, play games and colour in and draw and just hang out. She was always there for us.

“I felt like it would be a really nice way to remember her, and put what she means to me and my family into a book.”
