The Western Bulldogs have claimed back-to-back victories to start their 2019 VFLW season, the latest a 10-point win against Melbourne University at Victoria University Whitten Oval.

Two goals to Danielle Marshall and one to Annabel Scott got the Bulldogs over the line in wet and windy conditions.

AFLW-listed Bulldog Ellyse Gamble returned to the VFLW squad for the first time this season,  and played a key role in the backline.

A quiet first quarter on the scoreboard for both sides saw the Bulldogs working hard to resist the forward press of Melbourne University who had the ball locked in their forward line for the majority of the quarter.

Keeping the visitors to just one minor score for the quarter, it was all credit to the Dogs’ defence anchored by AFLW-listed Bulldogs Bonnie Toogood and Gamble.

The Bulldogs got rolling early in the second quarter when Naomi Ferres set up Scott for the first goal of the game.

Melbourne University could only muster a minor score between the Bulldogs’ first goal and second goal, slotted by Marshall with a minute remaining in the half.

The rain came down hard in the third quarter and Melbourne Uni found their first goal through Vivien Saad whilst also adding a couple of behinds to narrow the Bulldogs’ lead to two-points at the final change.

The Bulldogs emerged victorious, 3.4 (22) to 1.6 (12), with Marshall soccering through her second goal in the dying minutes of the game.

Next Sunday 2 June, the Western Bulldogs return to Victoria University Whitten Oval to host Geelong, with the first bounce at 11:30am.
