Season 2020 will be one to remember for influential defender Caleb Daniel – and not because the competition was temporarily moved to Queensland.

He recently claimed his first Charles Sutton Medal, edging out skipper Marcus Bontempelli by 10 votes, and earned his maiden All Australian selection.

He also recorded his 100th AFL match in round nine, and kicked a memorable goal from after intercepting a pass in round 17 against Hawthorn.

Daniel has quickly become one of the league’s best kicks, receiving praise online through a fan-made Twitter account @CalebDanielKick.

Averaging 20.2 disposals per match at 82% disposal efficiency, his reliability was something fellow backman Easton Wood commended him for.

“It was an incredible year from Caleb – just remarkable in his consistency throughout the entire year,” Wood said.

“A lot has been made about his precision kicking, which is the best I’ve seen throughout my entire career – both left and right, and even under pressure, it’s just amazing the way he can shift the defence to the way he wants to.”

Defender Alex Keath also recognised Daniel’s selflessness on-field.

“His kicking and his ball take is exceptional, but I don’t think he gets enough credit for his courage and his defending, and his will to help his teammates,” Keath said.

“From a personality perspective too, he adds a lot to the group in terms of heart and soul.”
