Mature aged recruit Brett Goodes has provided some grunt and poise to the emerging Bulldog backline since being selected in the 2012 rookie draft. Rebounding out of the backline, the solid defender saw a smooth transition from VFL to AFL level in his debut year. Elevated to the senior list ahead of 2014, Goodes continues to provide a level of hardness to the Bulldogs back six. Goodes was delisted at the end of the 2014 season, but was redrafted in the 2015 AFL Rookie Draft.

Season by Season

Season in short:

Although only managing three AFL games, Goodes had a stellar season at VFL level.

The 30-year-old had a 40-possession game mid-season and provided a bigger body and experienced head in the young Footscray side throughout the season.

Goodes was named best afield in Footscray’s VFL grand final win, taking home the Norm Goss medal.

Goodes was re-drafted by the Dogs in the 2014 NAB AFL Rookie Draft after being delisted at the end of the season.

The stat that mattered:

Goodes picked up 30 touches in the VFL grand final to win the Norm Goss medal.

What they said:

“We felt with the experience leaving the club over the last two months that Goodesy had a role to play both on-field, in terms of midfield depth, we’ve got a very young midfield and we think he could support that and that was highlighted with his best on ground in the VFL grand final.” – Bulldogs Recruiting Manager Simon Dalrymple following the 2014 NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

Season in short:

In a standout debut season for the Club, Goodes stormed into the round one side against Brisbane and never looked back. The 29-year-old AFL debutant played 13 matches before a broken arm ended his season prematurely. Goodes averaged 21 disposals and five marks per game while ranking 12th in the AFL for average rebound 50s. Twice managing 27 disposals as a medium defender, Goodes was instrumental in the round one win against Brisbane with 24 disposals at 88% efficiency and seven marks. The VFL convert also managed 25 possessions and 10 marks in a team-lifting effort against the GWS Giants.

Stat that mattered:

In just his first season at the kennel, Goodes led the Bulldogs in average rebound 50s, ranked fourth in average marks and seventh in average disposals.

What they said:

“I look at it as obviously they’ve shown a bit of faith in me, and that’s all I see it as, and I’ve still got to work hard and prove myself. Obviously I was fighting for that last spot last year on the rookie list, and to not have to fight for it this year – it doesn’t mean you can slack off – certainly is exciting and I’m looking forward to playing round one again. Even if I was on a rookie list again it was still going to be hard work this pre-season and hopefully playing games again.”
- Brett Goodes after being elevated to the primary list in November

Season by Season

This year Goodes consolidated his place amongst the state’s elite, being named on the half-back flank in the VFL team of the year, as well as playing an influential role in the Seagulls second consecutive finals campaign. Goodes was selected by the Western Bulldogs with their first round selection in the 2012 AFL Rookie Draft (pick no. 2 overall).
