The Bulldogs' third pick in the 2016 NAB AFL Draft (selection 49 overall), Young was taken as key forward from South Australia but transitioned into a defensive role in his debut season at VU Whitten Oval.

Young played seven senior games after debuting in Round 17 against Carlton at the MCG after averaging 13 disposals and five marks over 14 games with Footscray in the VFL.

Just 17-years-old when drafted, the South Australian scraped into draft eligibility by just 11 days but showed major improvement this season.

The former basketballer boasts exceptional speed and agility for his height and has a good, reliable pair of hands, Young impressed scouts before the draft with his performance at the SA draft combine.

Season-By-Season

Holding the title as the youngest player in the competition, 18-year-old Lewis Young notched up seven games in his debut season for the Western Bulldogs.

The Sturt product arrived at the kennel after being taken with the Bulldogs’ third pick in the 2016 NAB AFL Draft. He debuted in Round 17 against Carlton, collecting 21 disposals and nine marks in the Dogs' 20-point win.

Young averaged 13 disposals, five marks and two tackles per contest from his seven games and was nominated for the AFL Players’ Association’s Best First Year Player award in September.

Stat that mattered:

Young was recorded as the 999th player to pull on the jumper for Footscray/Western Bulldogs

What they said:

“Being able to grow as a player and a person was really important for me.

“Obviously having moved over from Adelaide was a big step but I feel like I’ve learnt a lot and enjoyed every second.

“To debut on the MCG against Carlton, one of the bigger clubs going around, and to get a win as well, it was an unbelievable feeling.”

- Lewis Young, September 2017

Season-By-Season

2018 was a steady season of development for 19-year old, Lewis Young.

Usually at home in defence, Young was used as a dual position player in the VFL, spending time between the forward line and back line.

Young had his opportunities at senior level, playing in the round 7 and round 8 wins over Gold Coast and the Brisbane Lions. Playing for Footscray, Young managed seven marks per game (16 matches) and averaged 16 disposals.
