Holding down a key defensive post for the majority of his 85 game career, Tom Williams showed under Coach Brendan McCartney that his athleticism can also be utilised in a forward role to great effect. While injuries have played a part in restricting his game time over the years, the Queensland recruit has proven to be a resilient character, never failing to put in the time, effort and patience required to rehabilitate a range of differing setbacks. In July 2014, Williams announced his retirement effective immediately, drawing to a close a 10-year AFL career. Williams was drafted with the Bulldogs first round selection (number six overall) in the 2004 AFL Draft.

Season By Season

Season in short:

The talented Williams endured a tough season in 2013. After missing the first eight rounds through injury, he proved his readiness for return by the Round 9 clash with St Kilda and played out the match. Tragically, the following week against Port Adelaide in Darwin, Williams suffered a dislocated shoulder requiring season-ending reconstructive surgery. The versatile big man spent the remainder of the year in rehabilitation in the hope of a successful 2014 return. Just before injury struck in the Darwin match, Williams kicked the eighth goal of his 78-game career.

Stat that mattered:

Williams’ game time was limited through injuries this season but his mere presence in two games greatly enhanced the Bulldogs' forward line setup. He kicked one goal, two behinds and had two score assists between the two wins from 56.6% game time.

What they said:

"While it's a disappointing outcome for Tom, we know he will treat his recovery with the professionalism and dedication we have seen from him since he arrived at the club. Tom is a highly valued Western Bulldogs person and we look forward to seeing him ready for the commencement of pre-season training."

- Chief Executive Simon Garlick

Dislocating his shoulder early in the second round of NAB Cup resulted in Williams being forced to watch the majority of the season from the sidelines in 2012. Playing for his first game of season proper in round 16, the 26-year-old defender adopted a new role bolstering the tall timber in the forward line. With a return of three goals and two goal assists from three games, Williams showed he can be an imposing marking target. He played three consecutive games before again being ruled out through injury.

Season By Season

The highly regarded defender took another step forward in 2011, cementing his position as a key player against the opposition’s best forwards. Shows great athleticism for a player his size and had a career-high seven handballs against St Kilda in round 12.
