LAST MEETING
Round 21, 2024
Western Bulldogs 15.20 (110) def. Melbourne 9.5 (59)
The Western Bulldogs defeated Melbourne by 51 points at Marvel Stadium, putting on a definitive effort based on midfield dominance, defensive pressure, and a diverse group of goalkickers. From the first bounce, the Bulldogs dictated the quarters, moving the ball with speed and precision to overcome the Dees. Marcus Bontempelli was a highlight, racking up 33 disposals, two goals and 16 score involvements in a performance that showcased both leadership and influence.
Bailey Dale finished with 34 disposals, which included 21 kicks and eight marks across half-back, while Caleb Poulter impressed with 23 disposals, seven tackles, and a goal. Tim English gave his teammates first use with 28 hit outs, 16 disposals and eight marks, combining ruck dominance with composure around the ground.
THE LINE-UP
WHO TO WATCH
Since returning to the senior side, Oskar Baker has settled into some form across the past fortnight. The 27-year-old has averaged 13.5 disposals and nine kicks this season, driving play from the back half and wing while adding value with ball in hand.
His Round 21 performance against the Giants was one of his sharpest this season yet, shutting down attacks and turning defence into opportunity. A former Dee himself, Baker’s pace and impact will be crucial this Sunday afternoon.
WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY
- Martin Pegan, afl.com.au
Melbourne (7-13) is set to start a new era after quickly dropping out of finals contention and parting ways with their drought-breaking premiership coach Simon Goodwin this week. The Demons had no problems beating the bottom-placed Eagles last week and the Kangaroos a month ago but now need to make a statement after what has otherwise been a dismal second half to the season.
The Western Bulldogs (12-8) claimed a scalp from the top half of the ladder with a resounding victory over GWS that helped them stay in touch with the top eight. The Bulldogs might have made a statement with the nature of their win but have little trouble brushing aside lesser lights like the Demons.
