Western Bulldogs midfielder James Harmes has called time on his AFL career, effective immediately.
The 30-year-old played 174 matches across 11 seasons with Melbourne and the Bulldogs, kicking 94 goals.
Harmes was drafted at Pick 2 in the 2014 Rookie Draft and, before arriving at the Kennel, was part of a historic Demons flag in 2021.
The premiership player said he was grateful to everyone who has been involved with his footy journey.
“I’ve been so fortunate to play AFL footy for over a decade at two amazing clubs,” Harmes said.
“Winning a premiership in 2021 was a lifelong dream and something I’ll cherish forever, while spending the past two years at the Bulldogs has been special.
“I feel like the time is right for me to step away from the game and focus on other areas of my life. I’m forever thankful to those that have played a part in my career.”
Sam Power, Executive Manager Men’s Football at the Bulldogs, said he was thankful for Harmes’s contribution while at the Club.
“We understand and respect James’s decision to step away from football and announce his retirement,” Power said.
“James should be extremely proud of what he’s achieved on the field, winning a premiership and contributing strongly for two clubs across his time in the AFL.
“We wish him all the best for the next phase of his life and he will always be welcome back at Mission Whitten Oval.”
