The Western Bulldogs have extended the contract of key defender Fletcher Roberts until the end of 2017.

Roberts has established himself as an important member of the Bulldogs defence and since breaking into the senior side in Round Five, the 22-year-old has played nine consecutive senior games.

Drafted as a forward in 2011, Roberts has been used in various roles in his career to date, but looks most comfortable in a key defensive post — taking on and beating some of the games’ elite forwards this season.

List Manager Jason McCartney said he was buoyed by Roberts’ progression as a key defender, particularly this season.

“Fletch has shown some terrific growth this season, and is really starting to solidify his position in the senior line-up,” McCartney said.

“He has a great ability to read the play earlier than most and his composure with ball in hand for a big man is outstanding.”

“We see him as a really important member of the defensive unit, and we are really pleased to have him re-commit to the Club.”

Roberts was drafted with pick 11 in the 2011 AFL Pre-Season Draft and has played 16 games since debuting in 2012.
