Weekend rewind

After a promising start the Western Bulldogs were overran by Fremantle who claimed a 54-point victory at Optus Stadium on Saturday night.

The Dogs were within a goal of Fremantle when Patrick Lipinski snapped truly at the midway mark of the second term but the home side piled on eight unanswered goals either side of half-time to kill off the Dogs' fight and keep the game out of reach.

The Numbers

Key mover Toby McLean (25 disposals, seven marks, six tackles and a goal) was again among the Dogs’ best.

Mitch Honeychurch (20 disposals, nine marks and seven tackles) found plenty of the football and fought hard all night.

Tom Boyd returned to the senior side after five goals in the VFL last week. He kicked the Dogs’ first goal, a mark and 55m bomb. Boyd finished with two goals, as did Billy Gowers.

You Can Quote Me On That

“It was just a deflating experience tonight. We had a couple of reasonable weeks where we played some good footy. Unfortunately, the key ingredients to those performances, pretty much fundamentals of our game, went missing for three quarters.” – Senior Coach, Luke Beveridge.

“It’s a massive learning curve these first five rounds, we put two good rounds together the last couple of weeks’ and to fall away from what we’ve been working towards is really disappointing. We’ll try and get that game behind us and really pick on the things we need to work on and get straight back into the fold for Friday night footy.” – midfielder, Caleb Daniel.
