Jackson Trengove says the Western Bulldogs still have plenty to gain from the final four rounds of the 2018 home and away season.

The Dogs will meet St Kilda on Saturday night at Etihad Stadium and Trengove insists that the game will provide an opportunity for the young team to set its direction for the future.

“We’ll really try to set that foundation for next year and beyond next year,” Trengove told SEN Mornings.

“Hopefully we’ll get a few players back over the next couple of weeks. We get back Lin Jong and Tory Dickson this week who will definitely help our line-up.

“We’ll be pushing to do the things right that we want to do around the club so that we can develop a winning culture that we can hopefully take forward in the next few years.”

Trengove spent large periods of last Sunday’s loss to Port Adelaide in the ruck against Paddy Ryder and finished the game as one of the Bulldogs' best players.

The 27-year-old, who crossed from Port to the Bulldogs as a free agent at the end of the 2017 season, racked up 22 disposals, 28 hit outs, 10 clearances, five tackles, four inside 50s and two goals.

“(After an injury interrupted start) I think I settled down back and feel I played some consistent footy but I enjoyed going into the ruck and competing on the weekend against Paddy. I think it’ll just be a week to week case.

“I don’t think it’s going to be one set position for me – it’s being able to play in the positions that’s required for the team on that particular day.”
