Angus Monfries and Josh Prudden have been named co-captains of the Footscray Bulldogs ahead of the 2018 Peter Jackson VFL season.

Both Monfries and Prudden will lead a leadership group of seven, including Will Hayes, Josh Wallis, Lauchlan Dalgleish, Matt Goodyear and Liam Nash.

Arriving at the kennel late last year, Monfries has enjoyed a 13-year AFL career at both Essendon and Port Adelaide, where he booted 248 goals over 211 games.

Calling VU Whitten Oval home for the past seven years, Prudden is a highly respected figure at the Club.

Though hampered by injury, Prudden averaged 12.5 disposals, four marks and two tackles over four AFL career games, and appeared in 43 VFL games.

Footscray Bulldogs VFL coach Steve Grace said that Prudden and Monfries were an ideal fit for the captaincy.

“Both Angus and Josh are great leaders on and off the field and are highly respected by their teammates,” he said.

“Already, Angus has had an incredibly positive impact on the playing group, both in his development coaching role and as a player, while Josh has forged a strong bond with the VFL team over his AFL career,” said Grace.

“We’re looking forward to witnessing the level of experience and professionalism that Josh and Angus are able to bring to our talented group during the 2018 season.”

Footscray open their season against Sandringham at Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Saturday, April 7.
