In last week’s episode of Freedom in a Cage, co-hosts Bob Murphy and Adrian Brown proposed a knockout tournament as a way to decide once and for all which Footscray/Western Bulldogs player took the greatest mark of all time.

From Chris Grant, to Matty Robbins, the votes have been counted and eight classic marks have been chosen.

Each week from now two marks will be pitted against one another to determine which one progresses to the next stage before we settle on the ultimate winner.  This week, Liam Picken’s slow-motion hanger from the 2016 Grand Final takes on Merv Hobbs’ classic, full-stretch pluck from the 1961 Preliminary Final against the Hawks.

You can vote on Facebook, Twitter, or at the bottom of this email, and if you’d like to tell us why you’ve picked who you have, you can email us here.

Freedom in a Cage listener, Karl Warkus, argued via email that Hobb’s mark deserves special consideration because the kick was a ‘mongrel’ that had come off the side of Bob Spargo’s boot, and therefore would have caught Hobbs out of position.

Picken’s grab, however, was taken on the biggest of stages, and in this tournament context matters.

“It’s a hypnotic mark’, Murphy said.  “It's kind of in the category of a hanger but he never really touches anyone, so it's more of a floater.  It looks like slow motion when it's not in slow motion.”

Who gets your vote?

Next week: Simon Beasley (Rd 10, 1984 v Collingwood) v Brett Montgomery over Ben Doolan (Rd 21, 1998 v Collingwood).
