With Fremantle launching a long-ball inside their forward 50m, Wood running back with the flight, soared onto the shoulders of Docker Lachie Weller, marking the ball at full stretch, before the contact with his opponent forced him near parallel to the ground.

Wood’s courage and athleticism combined brought the near 28,000-strong crowd at Etihad Stadium to its feet, and earned the Bulldogs vice-captain one of the three round one AFL Mark of the Year nominations.

Also nominated in the opening round, were Geelong’s Patrick Dangerfield and Carlton’s Andrew Walker.
