After a disappointing end to season 2014 where he missed out on the Footscray premiership side due to injury, Fletcher Roberts has played the last six AFL matches.

Roberts worked on his athletic ability over the pre-season and developing his running and agility, and was rewarded with his first game of the season in round five against Sydney and hasn’t missed a match since.

“I’ve been lucky enough to play the last six games and starting to find a bit of a rhythm,” said Roberts speaking with Crocmedia’s Sportsday program on Monday.

“I think the main thing for me was make sure I had the right athleticism to play AFL footy so the main focus for me was to work on my agility… and building my tank.”

Roberts has been a consistent performer, forming key defensive partnerships with Jordan Roughead, Michael Talia and Joel Hamling across the six weeks and says the development of the group has been a positive.

“We’re all providing competition for spots.

“Bevo and all the assistant coaches have been able to instil a lot of belief in all of us and it’s sort of made our confidence grow as an individual and as a team.”

Coming back from the bye round, Roberts was confident the Dogs would be refreshed and rejuvenated heading into the Brisbane game on Saturday night.

“It’s good on many levels, physically your body is pretty sore so it’s good to reenergise yourself over the break.

“And also mentally because it can be pretty demanding at times.

“We know what it takes to compete against the best now the plan is just to be as consistent as possible.”
