Sons of the West ambassador Brad Johnson recently took to Chemist Warehouse at Highpoint Shopping Centre to recruit new participants, with over 40 new participants signing up to receive their free health check.

“The thing that stood out to me – and it is only the starting point of it - is that a lot of men are open to change and maybe this is the type of shift that they needed,” Johnson said.

“It’s the encouragement they needed that the Bulldogs are providing to put their hand up, get the basic things done like your height, weight, waist and your blood pressure – but it’s the start.”

The 12 week program aims to tackle men’s health in the west of Melbourne, and to help them live healthier and happier lives.

“The message is men’s health and at the end of the day it’s creating a little change in your own lifestyle to help with certain aspects,” he said.

“It might be nutrition, which means you feel better about yourself and then helps maybe in the long term with the longevity in life.

“If you can make the changes, no matter what age you are, it’s a significant step.

“Promoting Sons of the West, whether it’s through the councils or through shopping centres, wherever it is, it’s just a huge bonus for everyone.”

Bulldogs great Johnson has been appointed as the ambassador for Hobsons Bay and believes getting a good night sleep and waking up refreshed sets the tone for the day ahead.

“The biggest thing for myself is the way you wake up in the morning – you need that good night’s sleep, wake up and start the day well and in a healthy fashion,” he said.

“That’s the little shift that then might help you throughout the day.

“That’s going to be my biggest message – it’s the way I am as a person, it’s the way I like to get up and get going and start the day well.

“I’m a pretty positive person so I’ll try to relay a few of those messages and help along the way to change maybe one significant thing in your life that will help in the long term.”

Johnson was pleased with the reception the program received at Highpoint Shopping Centre and said the support shows men’s health in the West is a high priority.

“It shows that everyone is taking it very seriously,” he said.

“Everyone is committed to men’s health in the west and it is great that so many other companies have come on board to be affiliated with the program.”
