The Western Bulldogs today confirmed veteran Robert Murphy as captain for season 2017.

Murphy will be ably supported by Easton Wood (Vice-Captain), Matthew Boyd, Dale Morris and Marcus Bontempelli in the leadership group.

Director of Football Chris Grant said Murphy was a much admired leader at the Club, and that the decision to continue with him as captain made perfect sense.

“Bob is universally respected for the type of character he is and for his on-field capabilities, but he has also proven to be an inspiring leader and someone his teammates really look to for guidance and direction.”

“We’re thrilled to have him as our captain, and equally pleased to have the leadership group that stepped up so well last year in his absence, continue together this season.”

Murphy said he was looking forward to leading his teammates again in 2017.

“Being captain is a role I am proud and humbled to continue in,” Murphy said.

“I’ll serve this Club, and my teammates to the best of my ability, and will do it in concert with a very capable leadership group.”

Murphy has played 295 games for the Club, and is currently on schedule to make a return in the JLT Community Series.

“My body and mind feel good, and I’ve progressed through a straightforward rehabilitation period to date.”

“To play in matches alongside my teammates is something that I’m really excited about.”

The Bulldogs kick off the JLT Community Series on Saturday February 18 against Melbourne at VU Whitten Oval at 4.40pm.
