The Western Bulldogs’ SpiritWest sports program been announced as a finalist of the 2013 Victorian Health Promotion Foundation Awards in the building health through sports category.

The sports program was extremely active in 2013,  helping over 1000 migrants and refugees settle into their new communities in the western region of Melbourne, through sport and recreation.

VicHealth CEO, Jerril Rechter said organisations, including the Western Bulldogs were working hard to deliver excellent health promotion projects.

“It’s fantastic to see so many organisations working with communities to enable people to not only be free from disease, but live in a state of physical, mental and social wellbeing,” Rechter said.

Western Bulldogs Community Engagement Manager Kiemi Lai said the program was producing some visible results and was encouraged by the announcement.

“Participants in this particular program have increased their self-esteem and have developed employability skills such as communication, teamwork, problem solving and self-management through structured sporting activities.” Lai said.

“As an organisation, our community initiatives are really important to us, and we are really pleased to be named a finalist  of this highly-respected award.”

The awards ceremony will take place on Tuesday 3 December, where the all winners will be announced.
