Footscray have proven too strong for the Coburg Lions, securing a 60-point win at Victoria University Whitten Oval on Saturday afternoon.
Despite the cold and windy conditions the ‘Scray were dangerous up forward kicking 18 goals for the day with five multiple goalkickers.
Footscray capitalised on their turn with the wind, with a six-goal to none first term and nine unanswered goals in the third term.
Lukas Webb proved a handful up forward, kicking four, first-half goals and amassing 30 touches for the game.
Nick Jamieson was another key contributor for the ‘Scray, with 26 disposals including nine tackles and five inside fifties.
The Dog’s defence also hit the scoreboard, with goals for Matthew Boyd (two), Jordan Russell (two) and Fletcher Roberts (one). Boyd also collected a team high 36 touches.
Both sides started slowly, and it wasn’t until after the halfway mark of the opening term did the ‘Scray deliver the first goal for the game.
Footscray dominated possession in the opening term, with 23 inside 50’s to the Lions three, peppering the goals, but the blustery wind making conversion a challenge.
The Bulldogs then found their mark, kicking three goals within a minute thanks to Webb, Jamieson Shea and Andrew Panayi.
Lukas Webb went on to kick another two goals, making it three for the term.
A late goal from Travis Cloke made it six unanswered goals to start the game for the Dogs.
Coburg made the most of the wind in the second quarter, with two early goals.
Lukas Webb collected his fourth goal to see Footscray hit the scoreboard, while a late Coburg goal lessened the margin to 34-points heading into half time.
Back kicking with the wind in the third term, the Dogs made sure they took full advantage.
The ‘Scray applied the scoreboard pressure to finish the term with nine majors, with Matthew Boyd, Travis Cloke and captain Jordan Russell scoring two goals each.
The scoring onslaught saw the ‘Scray head into the final break with an 88-point advantage.
Coburg fought-on in the final term, kicking five goals to the home side’s one, but it wasn’t enough to overhaul Footscray who emerged 60-point winners.
After their fourth consecutive win, Footscray will look to continue their momentum next week when they come up against the form side of the competition in Williamstown at Burbank Oval on Saturday afternoon.
