The Footscray Bulldogs have produced a commanding performance to claim a statement victory over WIlliamstown Seagulls, pulling away with a 14.17 (101) to 9.6 (60) win.
The contest opened at a fast pace, with both sides creating opportunities but due to the windy conditions, inaccuracies in front of goal proved costly early.
The Seagulls looked to use the corridor to generate attacking play, forcing Footscray to quickly adapt its game plan and match the host’s ball movement.
The Bulldogs began to gain the upper hand in the second quarter, lifting their intensity around the contest and generating repeat inside 50 entries.
The ‘Scray’s forward pressure was rewarded on the scoreboard, giving the visitors valuable momentum heading into the main break.
Both teams returned from halftime ready for another fierce battle, but it was the Bulldogs who took control.
A blistering third quarter saw Footscray pile on seven goals, capitalising on its opportunities while tightening up defensively to shut down Williamstown's corridor game and limit the Seagulls' attacking influence.
Despite Williamstown’s fightback, the Bulldogs remained composed, controlling the contest when it mattered most to seal an impressive victory.
Oskar Baker led Footscray’s stats with 23 disposals and four score involvements.
It was a day of goal kicking with both Louis Emmett and Kane Sexton slotting in 3 goals each. Rhylee West had an impactful game with 21 disposals and nine tackles.
Head coach Alex Johnson was proud of what the team displayed today.
“To start the game the right away and then finish the game the same, it was significant,” he said post-match.
When asked how this win would set up the rest of the season, Johnson said momentum would play a major role.
“Anything is possible for us,” he added.
Footscray will now look ahead to its round 16 clash with Frankston at Mission Whitten Oval on Sunday afternoon.
