Mission Whitten Oval was the Bulldogs' VFL/AFL home for generations and remains the squad's training base and administrative headquarters.

In 2014, competitive football returned to the Club's home base with the re-introduction of the Footscray Bulldogs into the Victorian Football League (VFL) competition.

Since the introduction of the AFL Women's competition in 2017, the Western Bulldogs has played its AFLW home games at the venue in the summer months, and VFLW home games in the winter months.

Formerly known as the Western Oval, the ground was renamed in honour of legendary Bulldogs player and coach Ted Whitten Sr. The Bulldogs played their last home and away match at the ground in Round 21, 1997, when they took on West Coast.
