New year, new number for Jamarra Ugle-Hagan.

The 19-year-old will inherit the number 2 jumper previously worn by Carlton-bound Lewis Young, after wearing 22 when he was drafted as the number one pick in the 2020 Draft.

As far as motive, Ugle-Hagan pointed to an inspirational mentor and fresh start as to the reasoning behind the switch.

“The main thing was I wasn’t happy with last year’s performance,” he said.

“I feel like the change in number can be more of a reset.

“I picked the number as my mentor is Chris Johnson and he wore the number two. He has looked after me while I have been in Melbourne.”

“I’ve always looked up to him.”

The jumper has been synonymous with Club legend Bob Murphy, playing for 18 seasons in the red, white and blue.  The former skipper ran out 341 times for the Bulldogs, kicking 192 goals and claiming two All-Australian jackets.

Ugle-Hagan couldn’t have been more excited to alert his hero of the news, making sure Murphy was the first to know.

“I love Bob Murphy,” he explained.

“I sent him a photo and he was the first to know when I got back to the Club. He got around it and loved it was which was good.”
