Western Bulldogs National Recruiting Manager Dom Milesi says the main focus this upcoming National Draft will be to select the best available player.

Rather than target a specific area of the ground, as per other clubs, Milesi said they will focus on choosing the player they rank highest, regardless of position.

“We’re pretty keen on picking the best player available at each of our selections,” Milesi told Cal Twomey and Riley Beveridge on the NAB AFL Draft Countdown.

“We really view the Draft as an ability to bring in young talent – whatever area of the ground they end up playing in that’s fine.

“We’ve got our talent order and will stick pretty firm to that.

“We can get a bit worked up about what’s going on in front as much as we like, but at the end of the day those clubs in front will pick the players and we’ll just pick the next best available to us at that selection.

“We’ve got a coach that is very big on flexibility within the playing list, so we’re not specifically targeting one area of the ground.”

The Bulldogs’ first selection currently stands at Pick 11, which could alter slightly due to live trading and/or bidding.

It’s a different proposition to previous years, where the Dogs knew well in advance who their first selections would be - with Next Generation Academy player Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (2020) and father-son prospect Sam Darcy (2021) their last two first-round picks.

“It’s actually quite exciting to be in this position for the first time in a couple of years, where we’re going to bring in some exciting talent but we don’t know exactly who it’s going to be yet,” Milesi said.

“We’ve done a lot of planning over the last 12 months so I feel like we’re really well prepared, but at the same time there’s a bit of unknown.

“If we can bring in a midfielder at some stage we certainly will – but as I said we’re really not too worried about the types of positions when it comes to our three picks.

“It’s really going to be whoever the player we rank the highest at that pick.”

As of Friday 25 November, the Bulldogs hold picks 11, 21, 39, 67 and 75.

The first round of the National Draft will commence on Monday night, with the rest of the Draft to follow on Tuesday night.
