Last Meeting

Round 10, 2022 (S7)
Carlton 4.7 (31) def. by Western Bulldogs 5.4 (34)

A miracle snap from skipper Ellie Blackburn with less than two minutes remaining secured the Bulldogs’ spot in the AFLW Season 7 Finals Series last year. The Dogs left it late to get over a plucky Carlton outfit at IKON Park, with Blackburn’s long-range snap putting her team three points ahead, which ended up being the final margin. 10 points down at three-quarter time and outplayed for large parts of the contest, the Bulldogs found a way when it mattered most. Blackburn was sensational for the red, white and blue, finishing with two goals from 23 disposals and nine clearances, while Alice Edmonds (28 hit-outs, four clearances, 10 disposals) and Jess Fitzgerald (13 disposals, eight tackles, five clearances) were also influential.

Talking Points

Home sweet home

The Bulldogs will have another opportunity to notch up a win on home soil when they host Carlton on Friday night.

While the Saints spoiled the homecoming last weekend, the Dogs will be seeking redemption against the Blues this time.

If the Dogs prevail on Friday night, it will mark 343 days since their last AFLW win – which coincidentally came against Carlton too.

Friday night footy

Another fact that falls in the Bulldogs’ favour is their record on Friday nights.

Overall, they have won six of 11 games that fall on a Friday – and are 3-0 against Carlton.

Remarkably too, the Bulldogs have kicked more goals (39) against Carlton than any other AFLW side, while Ellie Blackburn could become just the fourth player to kick 10 goals against one team (nine goals so far).

Hopefully this trend continues in round six.

Midway stats leaders

Now halfway through the 2023 NAB AFLW home-and-away season, it’s time to check in on our clubhouse stats leaders.

Probably to no-one’s surprise, skipper Ellie Blackburn leads the way for both disposals (average 25.4, total 127) and clearances (average 7.2, total 36).

Youngster Issy Pritchard is making a name for herself in the midfield, having laid the most tackles  (39, average 7.8) by a Bulldog this season.

Issy Grant has grown with confidence this year too, having taken the most marks (26, average 5.2) and the most intercept possessions (33, average 6.6).
