Marcus Bontempelli is set to become the fifth Bulldogs player to reach triple-figure games as captain this weekend.

Bontempelli has officially served as skipper since 2020, but his tally starts long before then.

In 2016, he became the youngest captain in the game’s history to lead a V/AFL team to victory.

He was 20 years and 194 days of age at the time, collecting 30 disposals (21 contested) in the eight-point win over West Coast.

Bontempelli stood in as skipper on another eight occasions across 2016-2018, before he was officially elevated to the captaincy ahead of the 2020 season.

Since then, he has remarkably only missed one game as captain – round eight, 2022 – with Jack Macrae standing in on that occasion.

Club legends Ted Whitten Snr (212 games), Scott Wynd (139), Arthur Olliver (127) and Brad Johnson (126) are the only ones that sit ahead of Bontempelli.

His leadership qualities are rated highly even by those outside the Kennel – having been twice voted the AFLPA’s Best Captain (2021, 2023) and twice named All Australian vice-captain (2021, 2023).
