A tough four quarters of highly contested footy just wasn’t enough for Footscray today, with Box Hill narrowly holding on to an eight-point victory.

Footscray were up for the fight from the opening bounce, matching the Hawks around the ball and refusing to let the home side dictate terms.

The ‘Scray came out snarling in the first quarter, kicking three unanswered goals heading into the first break.

But Box Hill came into the second quarter with a point to prove, kicking five goals to Footscray’s one and putting them into the lead.

Footscray's pressure around the contest created repeat opportunities going forward, but the Hawks continually found a response whenever the Bulldogs threatened to take control.

The visitors attempted to shut down the Box Hill surge in the third quarter, but inaccuracies in front of goal for both teams did not make things easier.

With the game there to be won in the final quarter, the Bulldogs threw everything at the Hawks.

Their intensity lifted around the stoppages and they surged forward looking for a late comeback, but Box Hill's composure under pressure proved the difference as they managed the closing stages well.

The desperation was high from both teams in the closing minutes as the Doggies were within a goal of victory. But Box Hill stayed composed and locked the ball in to take the win at Box Hill City Oval.

Harvey Gallagher led the Footscray stats with 26 disposals, one goal and six tackles.

Both Lachlan Smith and Jack Billings kicked three goals each, keeping the morale high for their teammates.

Footscray take on Sandringham at home next Saturday.
