WESTERN BULLDOGS president Kylie Watson-Wheeler has hailed the spirit displayed by the Club’s AFL team in their hard fought win over the West Coast Eagles on Sunday.
Speaking during an appearance on ABC Mornings with Rafael Epstein, Watson-Wheeler says the game was a nerve-wracking one for supporters but she is proud the playing group were able to pull through for the win.
“It was a stressful game to watch there’s no question about that but certainly glad to see that despite being under the pump the boys showed some strong spirit and pulled through at the end,” Watson-Wheeler said.
“I think West Coast are better than people think they are. They are really strong in the air, they kick accurately and they're pretty fast so I think you underestimate them at your peril.”
Watson-Wheeler spoke on the Club's captain Marcus Bontempelli and the role he plays in bringing the team together during these tight games.
“Our captain, he brings it when he needs to and brings that passion at the right moment to inspire the team. He was fantastic,” Watson-Wheeler said.
The team’s percentage is significantly lower than at this stage of last season, but Watson-Wheeler says she would sacrifice percentage for more wins on the board, which is what the team is striving for heading into the run home.
“It basically means that we need to bank an extra win against those that are in the same space as us so it does put a bit of extra pressure on us that's for sure,” Watson-Wheeler said.
“At the end of the day winning games is way more important. We had a fantastic percentage last year and we didn't (make finals) so I'll take an extra game win over a percentage growth.”
Expressing confidence in head coach Luke Beveridge's methods, Watson-Wheeler also spoke about his creative approach and reaffirmed her trust in that strategy.
“He’s always been a very inventive coach,” Watson-Wheeler said. “He does recognise when there needs to be change and he's not afraid to make that change and sometimes that change is controversial but I think that's been…certainly indicative of his entire coaching journey.”
“We’re seeing great spirit in our group at the moment under the leadership of Bevo. There's really strong language and connectivity happening behind closed doors so feeling very comfortable and optimistic with where we’re at.”
