On the result…
“We’re pretty rapt to get the win on the road. The Dockers are a really tough outfit.
“It’s pretty much playing two different kind of games, depending on the conditions.
“We’re really stoked. I was really rapt for our players and their ability to stick to a plan and just work really hard. I’m rapt to get the four points.”
On dealing with the conditions…
“We had a captain’s run out here on Friday afternoon, but when we woke up this morning and looked at the forecast it’s probably what we expected it to be.
“It was pretty tough, but we made sure the players were really well prepared when Freo had the wind. That meant doing something a little bit different.
“Sarah Hartwig played an amazing game – we got her to play forward and back basically for the whole game.
“Just making sure we were really prepared in how we wanted the game to look, and (both looks) were very different dependent on the conditions.
“We probably had a couple of opportunities into the wind as well but (missed) through some skill error. We said pre-game that it didn’t have to be pretty. It was just going to be whoever took their opportunities.
“It was a game of moments and we took ours.”
On the team defence…
“Our backs have been huge for us this year. We’re really proud of the system we’ve created defensively – it’s an all-in system – and the players adhered to that.
“It’s not only the backs doing a great job…making sure there is pressure on the ball when it’s coming in allows that +1 to actually work. That was really important for the players up the ground – that if the ball was coming in, it was under pressure.”
On Alice Edmonds’ impact…
“She was huge. Mim (Strom) is the premier ruck probably with Lucy Wales. Alice has gone head-to-head with both.
“She’s just so underrated externally for the stuff she does. She stepped into the leadership group this year and is a really authentic and influential leader.
“She was huge today – most games (this season) she has played 100% game-time too.
“She copped a corky in the first quarter as well, so for her to come back out and have a real impact…she works hard and reaps the rewards.
“I’m really pleased for Alice today – she’s had a great season.”
On the second-half of the season…
“We can take heaps of confidence out of today. We’ve had two wins on the road now, and in the two losses we’ve had to North Melbourne and Hawthorn, we did some things well.
“The signs are there that we are on the improve. There will probably be a log-jam for 6-10 on the ladder, so to get the four points today gives us a bit of breathing space.
“It’s probably a good indication of how our season has been. We’re an ambitious group…we want to be contending the top 8.
“4-2 is a nice way to sit at the halfway mark.”
