Western Bulldogs President Kylie Watson-Wheeler has expressed confidence in the Club’s positive trajectory and acknowledged high expectations for next season during her address at the Charles Sutton Medal.

Speaking to a crowd of more than 1300 at Crown Palladium in Wednesday night, Watson-Wheeler reflected on a year of resilience and reward as the Bulldogs prevailed in a record number of close finishes, encouraging attendees to "pause, take a breath, stop biting (your) nails and celebrate what was ultimately a season of progress and positivity."

“After a blistering start the road got a little bumpy at times, but the manner in which we finished the year and the magnificent spirit that was so often in evidence, even when the odds were stacked against us, should be a source of pride and excitement as we anticipate what lies ahead,” she said.

Looking to 2027, Watson-Wheeler highlighted the evident unity of the playing group and the prospect of significant high-profile additions, including the likely acquisition of Zak Butters and the return of Sam Darcy after a lengthy injury layoff.

“Our foundations as a Club have never been sounder. Our players are committed in every sense. And in the coming weeks and months ... we will welcome - and welcome back - two superstars of our game,” Watson-Wheeler said.

“A busy Trade Period lies ahead as we look to secure what we feel is required to consistently compete at the very highest level.

“Our best is already formidable, what is in prospect if all goes to plan is simply thrilling to think about.”

Watson-Wheeler celebrated several of the 2026 season’s defining moments and memorable highlights while also praising the team’s on-field growth throughout the season and the "sustained excellence" of those soon to be acknowledged in the night's awards.

Thanking members, donors, staff, volunteers and Club partners for all of their contributions to the Club's "unprecedented position of strength", she also highlighted the Club’s continued growth off field, pointing to record revenue, attendance, television audience and social media engagement metrics. 

“Our Club is a destination, in every sense,” she said.
