Two more years for Young

Developing key defender Lewis Young has re-signed with the Western Bulldogs.

Developing key defender Lewis Young has re-signed with the Western Bulldogs.

The 20-year-old has signed a two-year contract extension, which will see him stay in red, white and blue until at least the end of 2021.

Young has played two matches at AFL level in 2019, taking his career tally to 11 AFL matches since making his debut in 2017.

He was recruited by the Bulldogs with pick 49 in the 2016 NAB AFL Draft.

General Manager of List and Recruiting, Sam Power, said Young has a bright future as a Bulldog.

“We’re pleased to have Lewis recommit to our Club for another two years,” Power said.

“Lewis is still young, and continuing to develop his craft as a key defender. Importantly, he reads the play well, is competitive in the air and is getting bigger and stronger.

“He has been relatively consistent in his VFL performances this season, and has played his role when called upon at AFL level.

“We expect Lewis will continue to push for senior selection this year, and alongside the likes of fellow key position players Aaron Naughton and Tim English who have re-signed in 2019, be an important part of our future.”

Young becomes the 10th player to re-sign with the Bulldogs in 2019.

Standing at 197 centimetres tall, Young has spent the bulk of the season in defence, with stints also in the ruck and up forward.

He said he has been pleased with his development as a player, and that there had been no hesitation in recommitting to the Bulldogs.

“I’m really excited to have signed for another two years,” Young said.

“I’m really close with a lot of the guys, I love spending time here and just love the environment I’m in.

“I’ve spent a lot of time with (development coaches) Jordan Russell and Rohan Smith. Both being defenders in their careers, they’ve helped me a lot with my development.

“Trying to get consistency in my game week-to-week has been really important, so those two guys have been really good for me.”
