Williamstown are back on the winner’s list after recording a thrilling six-point victory over Collingwood on Sunday.
In a match where the momentum shifted often, the Seagulls were able to kick ahead in the final term, and hang on after a final push from the Magpies, to win 15.13 (103) to 14.13 (97).
Collingwood headed into the final term with a nine point lead, but Williamstown refused to give them any breathing room, starting the fourth term strongly.
After a purple patch saw the Seagulls kick five goals in ten minutes to create a 25-point lead, Williamstown looked home.
There would be one final twist however, as Collingwood kicked three quick goals within eight minutes, to bring the game back into dispute.
Williamstown’s buffer, however, was enough to secure them their third win of the season and keep their unbeaten home record intact.
The first three quarters were almost goal for goal the entire way through, as both teams battled for the ascendency but could never quite get a run on.
The Seagulls, who lost Ben Jolley and Justin Sherman to injury before the game, got a great lift from midfielder Willie Wheeler who picked up 26 disposals, while young Bulldog Josh Prudden also performed well in just his second senior game, picking up 23 disposals.
The win was crucial for Williamstown, who now sit in fourth place on the VFL ladder, while a loss would have seen them drop to eighth position after the completion of the round.
The Seagulls will now turn their attention to the clash against Frankston on Sunday 19 of May 2013, in a bid to record their first win of the year away from home.
