^The 1976 and 1977 Brownlow Medal counts were the only two years where both field umpires individually awarded 3-2-1 votes, rather than a combined decision. This resulted in a larger number of votes awarded to players during these years, including Gary Dempsey and Bernie Quinlan. The traditional system was reinstated for the 1980 season onwards.
