THE TALKING POINTS

Debut delight

Intercept defender Luke Cleary will make his senior debut under Friday night lights. Overlooked in his first draft, the 20-year-old has impressed in the VFL since being drafted with Pick 61 last year. A mid-size defender with an elite kick, Cleary comes in at the expense of the injured Tim O’Brien (calf).

Home ground advantage

While the Bulldogs will technically be the away team on Friday night, they will arguably have the advantage over MCG residents Collingwood. Despite the Dogs having not beaten the Pies at Marvel since 2016, they are on a three-game winning streak at Docklands, and have played 170 more games at the venue.

Honouring Robert Rose

Friday night will mark the 24th instalment of the Robert Rose Cup, named after former Pie and Bulldog Robert Rose who was paralysed in a car accident in 1974. He passed away in 1999, with the Cup established in 2000 to honour his contribution to the sport and raise awareness for people living with disability. Since 2007, the Bob Rose-Charlie Sutton Medal has been awarded to the player that best exemplifies the qualities that Sutton and Rose became renowned for over their careers - toughness, skill, courage, leadership, teamwork and sportsmanship.
